Dry Cleaning for Back-To-School Season

School uniforms come in various styles for different educational environments and situations, each designed to meet specific needs and dress codes. These diverse school uniforms require particular care to maintain their appearance, durability, and comfort throughout the school year. You can entrust our dry cleaning experts at Shamrock to take the utmost care and precaution with your student’s school attire and prepare them well for the first day back to school.

1. Formal School Uniforms

Formal school uniforms for private or preparatory schools often include blazers, dress shirts, blouses, ties, scarves, pants, skirts, sweaters, cardigans, and sweater vests. Some of these are usually made from wool, polyester, or wool blends, for which we first check for stains, particularly on cuffs and collars, then use a very gentle, solvent-based stain remover. We either use an air dryer or low-heat, depending on the nature of the item, to avoid shrinkage and further fabric damage. We’ll use a cool iron or press to maintain a blazer’s shape and sharp appearance. Some dress shirts and blouses made from cotton, polyester, or blends benefit from a pre-treatment for stains picked up in the classroom, from food and ink to sweat and dirt. We then use a mild dry cleaning solvent with a gentle cycle and iron on a medium setting but use a cloth between the iron and fabric of a blouse with delicate embellishments. And for items made from silk, we carefully spot-treat stains and always air dry to prevent heat damage to the fragile fabric. We use a low-heat setting or steamer to remove wrinkles and keep these items looking dapper.

2. Casual School Uniforms

More casual school uniforms often consist of khakis, chinos, jumpers, and polo shirts. These are usually made from cotton, polyester, or blends of the two. We first spot-treat stains with a mild stain remover and then use a mild dry cleaning solvent with a gentle cycle. These fabrics also tend to shrink, so we either air dry or use low heat to preserve the fabric integrity and structure. We iron on a medium setting for these uniforms and apply a pressing cloth for logos, embroidery, and other delicate or intricate parts of garments.

3. Band Outfits

School band outfits are often elaborate and made from delicate fabrics that require careful handling during cleaning, similar to formal attire. Stains like food, sweat, makeup, or grass can appear on these uniforms, especially around the collar, cuffs, and underarms. We typically use a mild dry cleaning solvent for polyester and wool blends and other synthetic materials that usually make up a band outfit for school. We use gentle cycles on these fabrics along with low heat. We’ll then air-dry items to maintain their structural integrity and lay them flat on a dry surface.

4. Gym Class Uniforms

Your sports and physical education (PE) uniforms, such as T-shirts, shorts, tracksuits, and sports jerseys, are often made from cotton, polyester, nylon, or spandex. These uniforms are particularly smelly and stain-ridden, so we are very observant of any extra care they need to return to the gym in pristine condition. We first spot-treat typical gym stains like grass, sweat, and dirt and use a mild solvent specifically designed for the synthetic fabrics that work best for PE. We avoid fabric softeners and will air dry to maintain the garments’ performance qualities.
